Spit Does Not Lie…and Other Stories

Recently, a miracle occurred. As a writer of Scottish romance, I hid the fact I wasn’t Scottish. My husband is, according to Clan MacBean which can trace him as a direct descent of John Bean of Exeter (John’s name was changed from MacBean when he was transported to New Hampshire as an indentured servant in the 17th century). Also, this makes my two sons Scottish.

All I knew was that my mom had a relative that came from Sweden via Ellis Island in New York and dad said we had German roots. The German information was harder to track due to the destruction during the 2nd World War.

Imagine my joy when I took a DNA test. Yes, my spit said the words I was happy to hear… “Nancy, you are part Irish and Scottish.”

I knew it! I have always felt it in my bones, which is why I plan to continue writing books either set in Scotland or filled with Scottish characters!

A big surprise was Norway, which includes Iceland. Could this be why I love the ocean? I have always wanted to live near water and managed to while growing up on Long Island (swimming in the Long Island Sound and the ocean off Fire Island) and in New Hampshire with a house on Lake Winnisquam. I hope we can visit the Atlantic coast again as hubby and I did by staying in Virginia Beach in January. I plan to soon visit the ocean off the Florida coast with my son Eric and my mom. I will wave to my countries of origin. Until then, I am a happy ‘mutt’.

Talking about Scottish characters,

Birthdays, Battles, and Books!

nancy lee badger cakeMy birthday is this month but it usually gets missed. Sending me a card? It probably will get delayed due to Veteran’s Day which the USA celebrates every year on November 11th. That’s okay. As the daughter, daughter-in-law, and mother of veterans, I will not complain (loudly).

The books I mentioned are my latest release, Rescuing Christmas and Heaven-sent Highlander. That second book, which is the second in my Warriors in Bronze series, was released months earlier BUT my publisher has released the PRINT VERSION today! I don’t know about you, but I prefer to read print books because the feel of the paper and the scent of the ink is comforting.

So, here is the scoop on Heaven-sent Highlander, released in ebook and print by Soul Mate Publishing:

At an American museum, surrounded by Auguste Rodin’s bronze statues, a Scottish Fae beauty is at a crossroads. Now that Gwendolyn’s friends are engaged, and the demon they fought vanquished, should she return home? After committing a terrible act, she could not explain to her cousin why she had appeared on his doorstep.

Alexander awoke in darkness inside a bronze statue, remembering how the green of Scotland’s Culloden field had turned red with blood that day in 1746. Had he died before awakening nude and sightless in front of strangers in present-day Raleigh, North Carolina? The mystery of how was overshadowed by why. Told that another warrior awoke when a demon threatened to take over the world, had a second demon escaped Hell? When the demon appears and demands Gwen join him, Alex must use all his new skills, weapons, and Heaven-sent powers to keep her and the world safe.

The End of Summer means… be kind to Editors and Writers

summer

How can summer already be over?

In North Carolina, the students that do not attend YEAR ROUND SCHOOL (those poor kids!) have all gone back to their classrooms. Summer might be officially over, but the days are still sunny and the nights just right. Hopefully, days of 90 degrees F and higher are behind us. So, too, are days of leisure for folks that work day in and day out for others. Me? I work for myself!

That is not quite true. I am a published author and have had my last two books released by Soul Mate Publishing. My third book in the Warriors in Bronze series is in the hands of my SMP editor, Lori Polito. In the meantime? I am releasing a book that I am self-publishing. What is the difference you might ask?

Here are the basic:

*Publisher: pays an in-house editor to make my book clean.

*Self-published: I pay an outside editor lots of $$ to do that

*Publisher: pays a cover artist to (hopefully) create a book cover I can live with

*Self-published: I find photos, choose colors, pick fonts to make the cover myself

*Publisher: formats the book, adding front and back matter, for ebook and print

*Self-published: do it all myself, including setting the price

*Publisher: advertises my book on their website

*Self-published: I do it all-website, blogs, twitter, Facebook, and Instagram as well as creating giveaways and setting up newsletter blasts.

*Publisher: collects the profits and sends me a portion every quarter

*Self-published: Since I am the publisher, ALL the profits go to me!

While writing and editing in a quiet corner of my home, or out on my deck, I find I keep thinking of how I took the chance at writing full-time by retiring from my 40-50 hour/week job as a 911 Emergency Medical Dispatcher.

Being a HYBRID author can be a challenge.

I must work to time each of my book releases so one does not overshadow the other. Advertising, newsletters, and keeping in touch of my readers so they understand all the different genres I write in means a little more work on my part. It is worth it!

September has been designated Be Kind To Editors and Writers Month, so I wish to publicly thank those editors out there, especially the ones who read and correct my work. (Waving to Lori and Kathleen Rothenberger) I am also patting my own back because I am a writer.

How To Celebrate…International Beer Day

beer and books

The first Friday in August has been designated as International Beer Day and I wonder how many folks imbibe in the brew just because it is a holiday? Trust me, when Cinco de Mayo or New Year’s Eve comes along, there is some celebratory drinking involved!

reading by the pool

People on this planet have enjoyed beer since 6,000 B.C. and brewed either a lager or an ale. Canned, bottled, or a draft at your favorite bar gives the consumer hundreds of choices. Over 50 countries around the world celebrate the day. What is better than cooling off after a swim with a beer and a book?

Stormy Weather is Coming!

Storm WarningJune 1st was the official start of Hurricane season. I don’t know about you, but tornadoes don’t wait for a specific date and time! The storms and floods affecting the United States was devastating.

Preparation is key, so know where the safest place is where you can avoid any storm. A relative in Florida hides in the cupboard under the stairs (and always makes me think of poor Harry Potter!)

I grab my cat, laptop, medicines, radio, and wallet and spend time in our guest bath, which is surrounded by interior walls. The cat hates thunder, but I hate twisters more. However, heed all warnings! Blaze

If the power goes out, grab a good book and get comfy. Heaven-sent Highlander, the 2nd book in my Warriors in Bronze series with Soul Mate Publishing, is an ebook available from AMAZON.  The 1st book in the series, Heaven-sent Warrior, is available as an EBOOK or PRINT. Enjoy!

Has A Motion Picture Affected Your Life?

I bet there are several motion pictures that you remember, no matter how long ago you first sat and watched. Thinking of a few of my favorites brings back the aroma of popcorn and the sounds of a room full of people screaming at the same time (think JAWS or EARTHQUAKE) Nudity on the screen used to make me squirm with embarrassment (I actually walked out of HAIR).

Death star

One motion picture that turned a STAR TREK television show aficionado into a lover of something new and exciting was STAR WARS. The opening scene of a small spacecraft being attacked by a huge ship that took up the entire screen turned the theater quiet. We had never seen anything like this. And, who can forget the battle between Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker to blow up the Death Star?

Heaven-sent Highlander banner

Writing paranormal romance is similar because I take a world and add something that could happen, but something my readers do not expect. My readers want to be entertained and I do my best to think about STAR WARS and what about that movie entertained me. Twists and turns and a really awful villain helps and I have those and much more in my Warriors in Bronze series.

Aprils Flowers do What?

umbrellaI grew up listening to folks say “April showers bring May flowers”, but is that because it rains so much? I suppose a RAINSTORM is oodles better than a SNOWSTORM but some of us get tired of wet shoes, dripping umbrellas, and staying inside.

One way to make the most of this time indoors is to be entertained, and authors do their best to bring you exciting new stories in every genre imaginable.

I have written contemporary, romantic suspense, time travel, dragons, and paranormal. You can easily find all my books HERE
