Groundhog Day Means More This Year

groundhog family

I can talk about Groundhog Day, but I know most people will have their eyes locked on their televisions. Super Bowl Sunday happens every year and it just so happens to land on our annual celebration of Groundhog Day.

The history is short and sweet: each morning on the 2nd of February, Punxsutawney Phil comes out of his winter burrow. If he sees his shadow, the prediction says we will have six more weeks of winter. If not, we will have an early spring.  Besides a celebration of woodchucks and football, this date will forever be imbedded because my dad passed away last year on that date.

Like the groundhog image above, he carried us three daughters into adulthood and I will be forever grateful. He also read all my books and shared them with other residents of the VA home where he lived during the last years of his long life. (GO NAVY!)

Enjoy the day the way you decide.  I will lift a glass of sugar-free root beer (his favorite) to my dad.  AND I will promote my latest giveaway which you can learn more about on my BLOG as I promote my Clan of Dragons series.

Groundhogs VS Dragons?

What would happen if a Scottish dragon met an

Americgroundhog1a-copyan groundhog?

They’d probably be the best of friends.

Groundhogs hibernate in underground burrows. The most famous groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil is brought out into the sunlight on Gobbler’s Knob in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania on the 2nd of February to see his shadow. If he does see it, it would mean six more weeks of winter.

skye-beach-192975_960_720Dragons loves dark, moist caves, and the ones in my series, Clan of Dragons, prefer caves found at the base of the Black Cuillin Hills, on the Scottish island of Skye.

Whether you wish for winter to continue, or look forward to spring, have a very Happy Groundhog Day!

Groundhog Day Quotes

groundhog1aWhat exactly is a groundhog?

The Marmota monax, also known as a woodchuck or whistlepig, is a rodent. Yep, Punxsatawney Phil is a rodent who happens to get very popular every February 2nd for seeing or not seeing his shadow. The legend goes like this: “If it is cloudy when a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day, then spring will come early. If it is sunny, the the groundhog will supposedly see its shadow and retreat back into its burrow, and the winter weather will persist for six more weeks.” *

“The groundhog is like most other prophets; it delivers its predication and then disappears.” – Bill Vaughn

“To shorten winter, borrow some money due in spring.” – W. J. Vogel

“Every mile is two in winter.” – George Herbert

(This quote reminds me of my dad in Florida whenever he called hubby and I in New Hampshire)

“Don’t knock the weather; nine-tenths of the people couldn’t start a conversation if it didn’t change once in a while.” – Kin Hubbard**

Does a groundhog have supernatural weather-predicting powers? Who am I to question the paranormal world? Happy Groundhog day!
